Poetic Matrix Press Winter 2020 Newsletter

Hello Everyone!

As we, hopefully, are finally moving toward the end of this terrible pandemic with the introduction of the vaccines, though it will still take some time, I hope you are all staying safe and well. I know the many families and loved ones of those who have perished are grieving and our hearts go out to them. Let us not forget that statistics are but a cursory stand-in for those who have died, we must not forget them!

Thankfully, my isolation, though annoying, has not kept this Press from continuing. Below are the new titles coming in 2021 and the tiles out in 2020 and 2019. These titles are available on our website and other online sources (see below).

What Remains by Charles Entrekin
130 pages, price $17.00
ISBN: 978-1-7337025-9-1, 2020

This is what truly great writers – the great journalists, novelists, poets, playwrights – always do: they know their communities from the inside out, as full members, and they tell the truth about what they know. It is a family story filled with love, tenderness and forgiveness, that rises above the noise and into the mind and soul, evoking another landscape, both of feeling and place.

At This Table by Raphael Block
148 pages, retail price $18.00
ISBN: 978-1-7337025-7-7, 2020

I look back at the deep sighs expressed in these poems, sighs of love and longing that we share in the same spirit breath. My short sojourn here, embraced by this great, generous being Earth, asks of me to "give back one speck, one jot, of all / you pour into these marrowed bones" (from Meeting Light , in this book). Beauty is one way of doing this, as are tending to plants, caring for animals, and participating in our own communities.

We Stand Up For What's Right by Hassan El-Tayyab and Audra Caravas (children's book) Illustrated by Angelyca Moffatt
36 pages, Price $15.00
ISBN: 978-1-7337025-8-4, 2020

We Stand Up For What's Right is intended for children between the ages of 5-10 years old, and teaches the importance of civic engagement and democratic decision making to advance a more peaceful society. After King Lion demands that his subjects go to war, the villagers hold a meeting under the moon and decide together that they want a say in war decisions. This book emphasizes the value of community decision making, speaking truth to power, especially in times of war, and how standing up for what's right can advance peace and justice for all.

Whispers of Krip Love Shouts of Krip Revolution by Lateef H. McLeod
ISBN: 978-1-7337025-6-0
price $18.00, 2020

Lateef McLeod writes some of most daring poetry I have seen. This is poetry that is finely crafted and, oh yes, clearly has something to say. The best poets, to be sure, have something to say, they are artist and philosophers.

Home Plate Was the Heart & Other Stories by Joseph D. Milosch
ISBN: 978-1-7337025-5-3
Price $17.00, 2020

These stories are like the stitching that holds the cover on a baseball. What happens at home sets up what happens out in the field. In Home Plate Was the Heart, batting practice trains characters for daily life with no off-season. How does the stitching affect the pitch? Will it hold? Even if you don’t love the game, but blood binds you to someone who does, this book is for you.

To Julie London (I've been in love with her and her voice for sixty years)

"The lyrics poured out of her like a hurt bird."

"Humanity can live without science, it can live without bread, but it cannot live without beauty. Without beauty, there would be nothing left to do in this life. Here the secret lies. Here lies the entire story." - Fyodor Dostoevsky
